Green Winged Meadow Orchid

Green Winged Meadow Orchid Anacampsis Morio is a beautiful orchid of old meadows, one common and widespread, it is one of the biggest victims of land ‘improvement’ where fertilisers and herbicides have decimated diversity. Where land has been unchanged it can be plentiful as is the case at Ashton Court near Bristol. Here literally thousands of plants cover several acres.

The orchid gets its name from markings on the lateral sepals at the top of each flower. Though not always immediately apparent, on paler flowers greenish lines appear along each side of the flower. Flower colour varies quite a lot – this link to a gallery shows some of the colour variations. Generally it is quite short seldom growing over 20cm tall.
