Lesser Twayblade

Lesser Twayblade

Lesser Twayblade Neottia Cordata. Dunkery Beacon, Exmoor June 6th 2017. This tiny orchid is generally found amongst sphagnum moss on damp moorland. Its main location is in Scotland, particularly the western highlands, but can be found in Northwest Wales and in an isolated colony on Exmoor.

It flowers from mid May to July but peaks end of May to mid June. This is one of the hardest orchids to find because it is very small – usually 5 – 10cm tall and growing amongst bilberries and heather in sphagnum. It has a pair of bright green heart shaped leaves, with a reddish flower stem and rust to beige coloured flowers. The flowers are tiny, perhaps 2mm across.
