Common Twayblade

Neottia Ovata

Delicate and often overlooked orchid that is widespread and adaptable. This photo was taken amongst the sand dunes at Kenfig, but it can be found in woodland, meadow, down land and hedgerows.

Twayblade refers to the distinctive pair of leaves at the base of the plant. They look a bit like giant seed leaves. The flowering period is from early May until July and, although they don’t impress immediately, a closer look reveals miniature olive green human shaped flowers. The plant pictured is average height, but the leaves and flowers are slightly unusual. The flowers are more golden than usual and the leaves more rigid and curled – normally the leaves are laid out flat above the low grass in which they grow.
